How a lab patient portal works with any LIS

The LIMS IQ Patient Portal is a separate $499/month per lab subscription, built to sit beside the LIS a lab already runs rather than replace it. The lab keeps ordering, accessioning, instrument interfaces, QC, result review, report templates, and billing where they are today. What changes is the last step: when the LIS releases a result, that released result and its official PDF report flow to the portal so the patient can see them without calling or emailing the lab.

The feed uses the same standard the LIS already speaks to EMRs. Released results arrive over industry-standard HL7 result messaging (the ORU message type most LIS platforms already produce for result delivery), and the portal matches each message to the right patient record automatically. Labs on LIMS IQ get this connection as part of the platform; labs on another LIS connect through a standard interface scoped during onboarding, reusing the existing result-delivery path instead of a manual upload.

What stays in the existing LIS:

• The system of record. The patient record, the requisition, and the specimen remain the LIS’s records. The portal holds only released results and reports authorized for a verified patient-to-lab link.
• Release decisions. Each lab chooses automatic release or review of patient-to-lab links before results appear, and controls the timing, sender, subject, and wording of email alerts.
• The report itself. The official PDF the lab already produces is what patients view and download; no second report format to validate.

Result timing is now a compliance question as well as a workflow one. Lab patient portal vs hospital or EHR patient portal

The two are complementary, not substitutes. A hospital or EHR patient portal (Epic MyChart, Cerner, athenaPatient) shows everything from that hospital or clinic: appointments, provider messages, encounter notes, medications, and results ordered through that EHR. It is scoped to the organization that runs the EHR.

A lab patient portal is scoped to laboratory results across the labs a patient uses, including walk-in draws, direct-to-consumer testing, employer wellness programs, occupational health screening, and mobile collections that never touch a hospital chart. It is stronger on cross-lab history, per-analyte trending, and family accounts, and it lets an independent or outreach lab deliver results directly without depending on each ordering practice’s EHR portal.

Passwordless onboarding and verified record access

Onboarding is the difference between a portal that gets used and one that does not. The LIMS IQ flow has five steps:

1. The patient enters a one-time code sent to their email or chooses Continue with Google.
2. The first verified sign-in creates the account; there is no separate signup form and no password.
3. A guided onboarding flow asks the patient to accept the current terms and complete a short profile before any health information is shown.
4. The account is connected to the laboratory records authorized for that person; lab staff manage those patient-to-lab links in the administration console.
5. The patient sees released results, official PDF reports, and per-test history for themselves and any linked family members.

Signing in alone never exposes results. Results appear only for verified patient-to-lab links, and portal actions are recorded in the audit trail.

5. Lab-controlled release and notifications. Automatic or reviewed release, branded email alerts, and staff resend tools.
6. Per-analyte trend views across repeat draws and connected laboratories.
7. Secure PDF viewing and download of the official report from the same result view.
8. Family accounts. Dependents and relatives under one login, with a per-person switcher.
9. Multi-lab support. One patient account linked to records at more than one connected laboratory.
